April 16, 2012 Week 16
Leadership
Competency: Self Management
Skill:
Soliciting Feedback
Read:
"Feedback is the breakfast of champions."
Ken Blanchard
Enhance:
1. Please remember that you are not the expert in who you are
and what you project. The people around you (key stakeholders)
have a much better idea of your style and approach than you
have.
2. Formal feedback systems and assessments have significant
value but informal feedback loops have as much, if not more
value.
3. During your regular one-on-one meetings with team members,
begin asking them how you are doing.
4. Be persistent and include this query for several meeting
cycles in a row. Because of team member uncertainty and the
newness of the request, the first few times you ask for
feedback, you will not receive much of value or some
patronizing responses.
5. Change the way you phrase the feedback question. Try asking
if there is anything you could do differently or if there is
anything you could do better to help the team member.
