Leadership Insight: Mr. Tim Cashman

Tim Cashman began his career at age 12 dissembling and reassembling parts bins preparing for a location move. By age 13, he was working a lube rack for the family automotive dealership. Upon securing a driver's license, he was delivering parts and stripping paint at Cashman Equipment.

There were no silver spoons for the Bishop Gorman and Loyola Marymount graduate. After college, Tim spent three years as a salesman in Reno for the equipment company and after some key team members left, he took over most of the daily operational management there.

In 1991, Tim returned to Las Vegas and shortly after that, he consolidated all family interests in the car business by purchasing Cashman Cadillac.

Question: How involved were you at Cashman Cadillac?

Answer: "Very involved. I managed the sales force, was involved in how service was provided and interacted with a great many customers. The first thing I did was to hire someone to run the human capital side of the business and another person to handle the money. I learned very quickly that hiring the right people was absolutely key to the success of the business. You hire good people and you have a good organization."

Leadership Tip of the Month:

Focus: Communication

Tip: Carefully watch your tone in written communication including email.

Add a tone sentence at the start and the end of each email to make sure the reader does not misread your intent or tone.

Often one line emails will sound harsh and the receiver will detect anger on the part of the sender.
